(More customer reviews)We have two of these (Hampton Bay) remote controls.They are connected to Hunter fans and have provided years of problem free service.We are about to buy a third control for a fan in the living room that will finally get a light kit.
On the rarest of occasions, the temperature in the room will be marginally in the "go" zone and nothing happens; that is, the fan should start turning according to the thermostat setting but it doesn't start soon enough to suit the occupant(s).This is easily fixed by grabbing the remote and adjusting the set temperature by a degree.The "being stuck" is a rare occurrence and will fix itself if left alone.For the most part, the fan starts and stops when it should.Sometimes, this happens many times an hour when the temperature in the room is in that marginal zone; we ignore it and let it do whatever it wants and at some point the room either warms or cools so the fan runs faster or turns itself off.
Sometimes the fan runs very S-l-o-w-l-y; this is normal - the fan will run this way if the temperature in the room is at one degree too warm.Running this way has never harmed the fans (our Hunters have been in our house for going on twenty years now). It doesn't seem to hurt the thermostat to have to switch the fan on/off/on/off either.
One of the advantages of using a remote control of this type is that you can avoid the need for the extra wires to control both fan and lights.This is the case for our living room fan; we have only the two wires to the control on the wall. We wish to add a light kit to the fan.No one wants to go into the attic to add two more wires.We will use the remote control to allow us to finally automate the on/off for the fan and to allow us to control the light.The advantage of having the fan turn it self on and off by itself is more obvious when the fan is in the bedroom.
The fan turns itself on when the temperature reaches the set point. The hotter the room, the faster the fan turns.The speed of the fan adjusts by itself.This is particularly nice at night - one can go to sleep with the fan churning away on medium (or high) and sometime during the night it will slow down (assuming the night cools) and by morning it may go off.During the day it comes on whenever it's needed.It goes off by itself.Awesome.The only thing we ever need to do is turn on or off the lights.
One needs only moderate electrical skills to install the device.As I recall, the instructions provided are adequate to the task.A reasonably trained lighting technician at your local lighting store might be able to help give sound advice to help with installation questions.It may be that the instructions from one brand to another are more or less clear.It appears the units are the same across three brands.
